Wrestlemania: WrestleMania VI
Location: SkyDome in Toronto, Canada
Date: 04/01/1990

WrestleMania VI was the sixth pay-per-view event, and the first WrestleMania to be held outside of the U.S. Its venue was the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) in Toronto, Canada, on April 1, 1990. Attendance was 67,678. It is considered by some to be the end of the pro wrestling boom of the 1980s, as Hulk Hogan, without a doubt the main reason for the boom, passed the torch to the Ultimate Warrior in the main event. Afterwards, the WWF started to have a decline in popularity that wouldnt stop until Stone Cold Steve Austin ushered in the Attitude Era in 1998.

WrestleMania VI was subtitled The Ultimate Challenge, which was also the name given to the main event between Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior, who were the two most popular wrestlers in the WWF at the time. The match was for both the WWF Championship (which was held by Hogan), and the Intercontinental Championship (which was held by Warrior), and was billed as Champion Vs. Champion, Title For Title.

Trivia

  • A teenage Adam Copeland (better known today as Edge) appeared at Wrestlemania VI as part of the audience, cheering for Hulk Hogan. He sat 12th row ringside and proudly wore a Hulk Rules T Shirt. 12 years later, at WWF WrestleMania X8, he would be at The Skydome wrestling Booker T in a match. Incidentally, Hogan also wrestled at WrestleMania X8.
  • Diamond Dallas Page drove the Pink Cadilac to the ring as a part of the entrance for the Honky Tonk man (whom performed his song Honka-Honka Honky Love. 12 years later, he would be at WWF WrestleMania X8 defending the WWF European Championship against Christian.
  • Demolition won the WWF Tag Team championship for the 3rd time, thus becoming the second Tag Team in history to win the championship 3 times. The record would stand solid until 1998 when The New Age Outlaws won the WWF Tag Team Championship four times that year.
  • WWF WrestleMania VI was the first WWF WrestleMania event to be held outside of the United States. Most of the WWF Pay Per Views are held within the boarderline of America.
  • Referee Earl Hebner uncharacteristically wore a long-sleeved referee shirt during the main event. Hebner had previously been the only WWF referee to wear a short-sleeved shirt.
  • Was the first of three WWF WrestleMania events to feature a main event where the challengers were both faces (or fan favorites). The other two are WWF WrestleMania XII (Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels) and WrestleMania X-Seven (Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs The Rock).
  • Both WrestleMania VI and WrestleMania X8 would see Hulk Hogan lose in the Skydome (he lost to The Rock and The Ultimate Warrior). The two events also featured a winner in the main event whom walked away with two championship belts (The Ultimate Warrior walked away as The WWF Champion and The WWF Intercontinental Champion, and Triple H walked away as the WWF Undisputed Champion, holding both the WWF Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship that Chris Jericho united at Vengeance in 2001).
  • The Hart Foundation hold an unbroken record in WrestleMania history when they defeated The Bolsheviks in 19 seconds. Bret Hart, of course being Canadian, was wildly cheered that night.
  • It should be noted that despite their crushing defeat, comedian Steve Allen had a comic sketch with The Bolsheviks earlier that night, even going so far as to call them his favourite Soviet tag team. He also stated that he would play the Soviet national anthem on his piano. Unfortunately, the venue for this concert was the mens shower room, and he never performed the anthem, only other tunes mocking said anthem. This infuriated Nikolai Volkoff who had to be restrained by his partner Boris Zhukov.
  • WrestleMania VI was the last WrestleMania that Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura hosted together. Monsoon and Ventura had commentated on every WrestleMania up until that point.
